The story behind my Men’s Health article and my own weight loss transformation

18 months prior to being featured in the magazine I had a serious dirt bike accident, which required me to have a major shoulder operation. The procedure I had was a full acromioclavicular reconstruction – trust me, it was not pleasant.

Having been an active sports person my whole life, I was devastated when the surgeon told me how long the expected recovery was …… 12 months!

To make matters worse, I was told that I could not play my favorite contact sport without major risk of re-injuring myself and doing serious permanent damage.

The situation got much worse before
it got any better

For four months after my operation, I had my shoulder in a sling and was confined to the lounge room of my house. I wasn’t able to go out or do anything for risk of damage to my shoulder.

For the first time in my life, I began to put on weight - and not in a good way. The forced lack of physical activity combined with a degree of “comfort” eating caught me off guard at my lowest point.

Just four months after my surgery, I was 17kgs heavier than my “competition” weight.

It was then that I began to research and trial every known weight loss method …. but nothing seemed to give me the results I was looking for.

And then I signed up for my first regional bodybuilding championship and I had to get deadly serious about losing weight and getting into shape. I set myself that goal – I was going to get my body into top shape for the competition or risk looking like a complete idiot on stage!

But I had two major hurdles to overcome, first, how I was going to train with my shoulder injury, and second, how on earth I was going to lose 17kgs in 12 weeks!

Returning to the gym, I was disappointed to realize that my bench press was down to a measly 100lbs from a previous personal best of 315lbs.

In the weeks that followed, to say that I became an “expert” in training around an injury is an understatement. I devoured every text I could find for knowledge to help regain my upper body strength.

To cut a long story short ….. I ended up losing 17kg (37.4lbs) in just twelve weeks, competed in the regional Bodybuilding Championship and I placed 2nd in my division! Remember this was AFTER a full Shoulder Reconstruction!
